A long-time public defender has been named chief public defender by the board of directors of the Toledo Legal Aid Society.

M. Sean McNulty succeeds the late Henry Herschel, who died in December.

A graduate of the University of Iowa and the University of Toledo College of Law, Mr. McNulty has been employed by Toledo Legal Aid Society since 1994 and has been supervising attorney at Lucas County Juvenile Court since 1994.

Lucas County Probate Judge Jack Puffenberger, president of the board, said Mr. McNulty will continue to supervise the six public defenders assigned to juvenile court as well as oversee the organization’s 22 staff attorneys and eight contract attorneys who represent indigent defendants in the county’s four municipal courts as well as common pleas court. He is to be paid $61,000 a year.
