Trial date set for man charged with shooting ex-girlfriend

A trial date of Sept. 22 was set Tuesday for a Toledo man charged with shooting his ex-girlfriend to death in October.

Marquis Walker, 30, of 1248 Woodland Ave. is charged with aggravated murder, murder, and aggravated burglary for the Oct. 13 shooting of Jordan Jones-Harris, 23, at her Alexis Road apartment. The two had dated for years, but had ended the relationship a few months before her death.

Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Dean Mandros heard lengthy testimony Tuesday on Mr. Walker’s motion to suppress a photo array used by police, in-court identifications by three witnesses who were unable to identify Mr. Walker in the photo array, and statements Mr. Walker allegedly made when he was arrested in Jonesboro, Ark., and taken back to Toledo.

Jonesboro Police Officer Jason Chester testified that when police forced entry into an apartment March 7 to arrest Mr. Walker, he heard a gunshot, then found Mr. Walker leaning against a wall with a gun pointed to his head. The defendant was crying and praying, he said, and saying that his life was over, that he was going to spend the rest of his life in prison.

The officer said he did not read Mr. Walker his Miranda warnings because he was not asking him questions about the homicide or “any criminal activity.”

Judge Mandros did not rule on the motion but gave defense attorneys until Aug. 1 to file additional information. Mr. Walker is being held in the Lucas County jail on a $1.1 million bond.
