Driver in February accident sentenced to 6 months jail, alcohol monitoring

A Toledo resident who killed a man in a hit-and-run car accident in February was sentenced today to six months in jail and subsequent monitoring to prevent him from drinking.

Robert W. Conboy, 84, of 4908 Monac Drive, struck Donald Galdys, 59, of Toledo, who was walking against traffic in the eastbound curb lane of West Alexis Road on Feb. 12. At the time, Conboy’‍s blood-alcohol content was slightly over Ohio‘‍s legal limit, which is 0.08.

Officials said that a witness to the incident called 911 and followed Conboy, who did not stop but drove on to his Jamieson Drive apartment, where he was later taken into custody by police.

In June, Conboy pleaded no contest to aggravated vehicular homicide and failure to stop, and Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Gene Zmuda found him guilty of those charges. Today, he sentenced Conboy to serve his six months at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio.

He also will be subjected to six months of electronic monitoring with an alcohol-detection device upon release. Judge Zmuda also suspended his driver’‍s license for life, and ordered that he undergo random breathalyzer tests during his three years of probation. In addition, he has to perform 200 hours of community service.
