Ichabod Crane rides again in Legend of Sleepy Hollow
10/8/2008Youngsters are the target audience for two productions opening this week in the region, one based on a New England legend, the other on a book.
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow comes to life today in Sandusky.
As part of its Student Series, the Sandusky State Theatre hosts the Children s Theater of Cincinnati in two performances of the Washington Irving story about the new schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane, the lovely Katrina Van Tassel, the jealous Brom Bones, and other residents of Tarry Town, Mass., who live with a legend of a headless horseman.
It s part of the Ohio Art s Council s touring program, said Sandusky State executive director Thomas T Kazmierczak III. We wanted to do something for families this year, and we heard about the arts council s outreach and researched it and found a great lineup of shows.
It s a full professional production, said Krista Katona Pille, director of marketing and public relations for the Cincinnati troupe. We tour with four actors; there s a full set, sound system, and the like.
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is part of the troupe s ArtReach branch, which presents productions in Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, and Indiana, she said.
Performances are at 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the Sandusky State Theatre, 107 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Tickets for the morning show are $2; for the evening show, they are $5. Information: 419-626-1950 or (toll free) 877-626-1950.
As part of his world travels, Stanley Lambchop is coming to Sylvania.
Stanley was once an ordinary boy who yearned to travel the world, visiting exotic places. But his allowance didn t exactly cover the cost of such adventures.
Then one morning, Stanley woke up and discovered that his bulletin board had fallen on him and squished him flat as a pancake. This is a good and a bad situation. Stanley needs to find a way to become three-dimensional again. But he can now afford to travel, because he can fold himself to fit in an envelope. For Stanley, the cost of adventure comes down to the price of a stamp.
Based on a 1964 children s book by Jeff Brown, The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley continues the Theater Vision Program at Lourdes College.
Presented by INTRAMUSIC Theatricals of Short Hills, N.J., the musical travelogue focuses on geography and cultural ideas as Stanley travels the world, seeking a solution to his dilemma as he meets new friends and learns about different cultures. It s aimed at students in grades 1-4, but the public is welcome to attend.
The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley is at 10 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Wednesday and Oct. 16 in the auditorium of the Franciscan Theatre & Conference Center of Lourdes College, 6832 Convent Blvd., Sylvania. Tickets are $8. Information: 419-824-3986.
