Whitney Houston on the comeback trail

6/5/2009

"...as human beings we are capable of making sense of situations based on the thinnest slice of experience."

Malcolm Gladwell, author of Blink and The Tipping Point.

SHE'S BAAAACK!: Whitney Houston is making a comeback according to Rolling Stone magazine, which is good news for folks who dig her pipes. Here's hoping she keeps it together. (RL)

Thin Slices will be off early next week. Have a good weekend.

WE SPEAK TRUTH TO HER POWER: In a kind of strange ranking system that we don't quite understand, Angelina Jolie was named the most powerful celebrity in the world by Forbes magazine. Apparently they look at media exposure -- no thank you -- and earnings -- we'll take those -- and make their call on who's the biggest, baddest celeb. For the record, she knocked Oprah off the top perch. (RL)

JONAS BROTHERS COULD BE SEDUCED: At least that's what their mom says. We have no comment on this issue other than to agree with her that they "have testosterone." (RL)

RATINGS BONANZA: Conan O'Brien's first night on The Tonight Show was a big hit according to the ratings, despite a jibe or two from competitor David Letterman. But that didn't stop at least one wag from weighing in with some advice. (RL)

DAY IN THE LIFE: Ever wonder what a president does all day? MSNBC put together this somewhat unprecedented look into a typical day for Barack Obama and he's about as busy as you'd expect. And it's kind of depressing to know that even if you're the president, you get stuck in a log of meetings. (RL)

OOPS!: It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy at the MTV Awards show Sunday when Sasha Baron Cohen as his gay alter ego Bruno landed butt-first in Eminem's face. Turns out Eminem was in on it. Meanwhile, Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake had fun with the whole public nudity thing. (RL)

THE END (WE HOPE): Susan Boyle had a bad weekend. First, she did not win Britain's Got Talent as many expected and like wished for. Then she had some sort of breakdownafter the show. Now it's time to leave her be and hope that she lands a nice fat recording contract -- if that's what she wants -- and gets a gig touring with someone like Daniel O'Donnell, who'd bring her a sympathetic audience.
