Checking out Tiger Woods through the eyes of youth

"...as human beings we are capable of making sense of situations based on the thinnest slice of experience."

Malcolm Gladwell, author of Blink and The Tipping Point.

HUNTING FOR A TIGER: Our culture's relationship with celebrities is complex, at best, and at worst it's destructive because it creates expecatations that are impossible to meet and ultimately dehumanizes all of us. But when you get a chance to watch an athelete or musician or movie star at work (instead of at the grocery or stumbling out of a bar or whereever the paps hunt them down), it's a wonderful thing, which this column expresses well as a Detroit sports writer watches Tiger Woods at the Buick Open. LET THE SHREDDING BEGIN: Would-be guitar gods, this list is for you. Activision has announced the lineup of 85 songs that will be on its Guitar Hero 5, scheduled for release Sept. 1. With everything from Bob Dylan to The Killers, there's something for everyone. (RL)

THE POETRY OF PALIN: Thanks to Conan O'Brien, William Shatner has found the poetry in Sarah Palin's resignation speech. In case you're thinking, "Oh boy, there they go again, those liberal media fellas, dag gone it, makin' fun of Sarah," here's her speech verbatim. (RL)

GONE VIRAL: If this doesn't make you smile, then your funny bone is broken. Kevin Heinz and Jillian Peterson, their seven bridesmaids, five groomsmen and four ushers make a funky entrance June 20 to Chris Brown's "Forever" for their wedding and it's been a Youtube smash, with 10 million hits and counting. BEER SHOPPING: President Barack Obama has a big decision to make today: what type of beer should he serve when he meets with Henry Louis Gates and Sgt. James Crowley? Anyone who has the president's number should forward it to Thin Slices ASAP. There can be only one choice: Dortmunder Gold from the Great Lakes Brewing Co. in Cleveland. (RL)
