Thin Slices salutes Crystal Bowersox, a class act

5/28/2010

"...as human beings we are capable of making sense of situations based on the thinnest slice of experience."

Malcolm Gladwell, author of Blink and The Tipping Point.

A THIN SLICES HERO: Crystal Bowersox did everything right during the run-up to the finale of American Idol this season. She handled herself with grace and modesty, never publicly cracking under the immense pressure that goes from playing in East Toledo bars one day to just weeks later standing before tens of millions of people who are judging your looks, your voice and your wardrobe. She was charming and poised and, most important of all, she acted like an artist who cares more about her craft than the fickle nature of a talent show. Northwest Ohio should be proud of her. Her family should be proud of her. And most of all, she should be proud of herself. With that said, here is the Thin Slices top three Bowersox Idol highlights. RL

People Get Ready

Up To The Mountain

LOST, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN: The finale of Lost Sunday night attracted 13.5 million people to sit in front of their TV to learn what happened on the weird island over the past six years. Unfortunately a fair number of folks aren't sure exactly what they saw. Thin Slices relies on staff member Kirk Baird for our Lost musings and he had mixed feelings. One thing we know, it's never easy to end a television show. Right M*A*S*H? Right Seinfeld? RL

SLIPKNOT BASSIST DIES: The heavy metal band's bass player Paul Gray was found dead Monday in an Urbandale, Iowa hotel room. An autopsy is planned for the man dubbed "First Maggot." The Iowa band that features macabre face masks was an unlikely Grammy winner and is known for it's relentless, driving live shows. RL
