Owner can't be happy with Redskins

10/18/2002

Daniel Snyder's new coach in our nation's capital is 2-3 and will be hard-pressed not to be 2-4 after Sunday's game at Green Bay.

You think it grates on Danny Boy that his most recent old coach, Marty Schottenheimer, who was dissed after just one season, is 5-1 in San Diego?

Surely it grates on him that his Redskins under Steve Spurrier, who is being paid something close to the gross national product of Labrador, are undisciplined at best and uninteresting at worst.

The old ball coach, as Spurrier likes to call himself, watched his team lose the football five times, allow two special-teams touchdowns and leave its rookie quarterback unprotected to the tune of seven sacks in last Sunday's 43-27 loss at home to New Orleans.

While the results in the early going have changed since his days at the University of Florida, the acid-tongued Spurrier fortunately has not.

“We're not smart enough to give ourselves a chance to win,” Spurrier said after the loss to the Saints. “It doesn't look like we care. Obviously, we looked like a very poorly coached team. We lack effort, discipline and responsibility. It's pitiful watching us play. I can't watch this. Our fans are not going to pay a bunch of money to watch this.”

Snyder, with 86,000 seats to fill at FedEx Field, must have loved that last comment most of all.

tBoy, did the Swami ever get that Buckeye blood boiling a week ago by mentioning the word “overrated.” Cards, letters, e-mails, voice mails - you sent 'em and we got 'em.

Look, dear friends, we didn't say Ohio State wasn't any good. Didn't even imply it. The point was, and is, that the Bucks have parlayed one quality win, some narrow escapes on the road and a mostly powder-puff schedule into a very high national ranking.

How can anyone objectively dispute that?

Ah yes. Objectivity. Our mistake.
