Area builder was active in construction associations

7/14/2003

Mark Reynolds, former vice-president of Reynolds Construction Co. and a construction superintendent for the Douglas Co., died Saturday of cancer at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg. He was 49.

Mr. Reynolds started working at his father's construction company at 15. He majored in journalism at the University of Wyoming and led rafting tours on the Snake River on his summer vacations.

He returned to Ohio and started work for Reynolds Construction about 1976 and spent 25 years working in every part of the business from sweeping floors to building and selling homes.

He oversaw the construction of several subdivisions in the area.

He served as president of the Home Builders Association of Greater Toledo in 1994 and was also active for at least 10 years in the Ohio Home Builders Association and the National Association of Home Builders.

Bill Decker, president of the Home Builders Association of Greater Toledo, knew Mr. Reynolds for a long time. He is also a second-generation builder and was able to talk with Mr. Reynolds about the challenges of working for your father.

In 2001, Mr. Reynolds became a construction superintendent for the Douglas Co. He wanted the opportunity to work on larger commercial projects.

He played rugby in college, playing the scrummy position, and had traveled to the Cayman Islands to compete. He played rugby for the Toledo Celtics in the mid-1980s.

Mr. Reynolds enjoyed building furniture from driftwood that he would find walking along the Maumee River.

He was fascinated by local history, especially the Battle of Fallen Timbers.

Surviving are his wife, Patty; son, Andrew; daughters, Allison and Kathleen; parents Charles and Kathryn; sister, Cynthia Overly; and brothers, Brad and Brian.

Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at the Bersticker-Scott Funeral Home, 3453 Heatherdowns Blvd., where services will be held tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.

The family suggests tributes to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Courthouse Square in Toledo.
