7/31/2004

CLYDE, Ohio - Marjorie A. Buck, a retired York School librarian and a former head librarian at the Clyde Public Library, died of cancer July 23 at the Gardens at Clyde nursing home. She was 92.

"Books were her thing," her sister, Eleanor Orndorff, said. "She was a true librarian. She wanted to help people to learn to read, and she did."

In 1980, Mrs. Buck received the Woman of the Year award from the Clyde Business and Professional Club.

A year later, she got the Book of Golden Deeds annually awarded by the Clyde Exchange Club.

Finally, in 1993, the Clyde Business and Professional Association gave her the Distinguished Service award.

Mrs. Buck, a Toledo native, graduated from Libbey High School in 1929 and worked at the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library until 1950 when she moved to Clyde.

She then was a librarian at York School, just east of here, for several years, and then became librarian at the Clyde Public Library, where she worked for many years before becoming the head librarian, the position from which she retired in 1981.

Mrs. Buck was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Clyde, where she taught Sunday school and was a past president of the Women of the Church group, and a charter member of the Clyde Business and Professional Women.

Her other memberships included the George Croghan Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Clyde Garden Club, Friends of the Clyde Public Library, Progress Literary Club, also in Clyde, the Ohio Library Association, and the Clyde Heritage League, where she was a museum committee member.

In her free time, she enjoyed tutoring at reading classes in the Clyde-Green Springs school system.

Surviving are her daughters, Barbara Nething and Elizabeth Anderson; son, Edward L. Buck; sister, Eleanor Orndorff, and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 7 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Clyde. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Friday in the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, Clyde.

The family suggests tributes to St. Paul Lutheran Church or the Clyde Public Library.
