Former Marblehead man owned marina

10/15/2005

MARBLEHEAD, Ohio - Charles L. "Roy" Shrock, 92, a tool-and-die maker who, with his father and brother, founded a marina used by generations of Lake Erie boaters, died Monday in St. Charles Mercy Hospital from complications of abdominal surgery.

Mr. Shrock, formerly of Marblehead, lived most recently in Martin. He worked in his trade across northern Ohio. He was at the General Motors New Departure plant in Sandusky more than 30 years, retiring in the 1970s. "He was always winning incentive awards for devising different tools," daughter Kathy Walker said.

In the early 1930s, he, and his father, Ira, and his brother, Raymond, founded Shrock's Marina on the Marblehead peninsula. They rented boat slips and sold bait. And, at the start, they put up cottages, which they rented to vacationers. They also repaired boats.

The brothers had full-time jobs and worked at the marina nights and weekends.

"It was something they took from absolutely nothing to something they were absolutely proud of," his daughter said.

He and his wife, Genevieve, married Sept. 13, 1958. She died Feb. 4, 2003. He also was preceded in death by first wife, Eloise Shrock.

Surviving are his daughters, Anne K. "Kathy" Walker and Susan Shrock; five grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Marblehead, where he had been a member. The family suggests tributes to the American Cancer Society or a charity of the donor's choice.
