Wood County psychologist directed clinic
11/16/2005BOWLING GREEN - Richard Allgeier, 61, a psychologist and former director of the Wood County Mental Health Clinic, died Friday in his home.
The family did not know the cause of death.
Mr. Allgeier directed the Wood County Mental Health Clinic from in the mid and late 1980s. Since then, he had private practices in Maumee, Perrysburg, and Bowling Green.
Over the years, he taught psychology courses at Bowling Green State University, State University of New York in Fredonia, and Purdue University.
Mr. Allgeier and Elizabeth Rice Allgeier, his wife of 31 years, have co-authored a successful psychology text book, Sexual Interactions. First published about 1980, it has seen five editions, and was translated into French.
They also collaborated on many research and writing projects in psychology, human sexuality, gender identity, and behavioral and demographic aspects of HIV/AIDS.
"[His colleagues] described him as very gentle, soft spoken, and dedicated to his clients," his daughter, Beth Moore Haines, said.
An ardent advocate of social justice and human rights, he was a member of the American Civil Liberties Union and participated in numerous anti-war protests of the Vietnam War era.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth; son, Donald; daughters, Beth Moore Haines, Sarah Perry, and Kate Laughlin; mother, Marilyn Scheppner; half-brothers, Greg Scheppner, Matthew Scheppner, David Scheppner, and John Scheppner; half-sisters, Debbie Bender, Nancy Descalia, Janice Pollock, and Valerie Tyrell, and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Friday in the Deck-Hanneman Funeral Home, Bowling Green, where visitation will be after 1:30 p.m. Friday.
The family suggests tributes to the ACLU.
