TIFFIN - Dorothy Mae Ellis, 72, a retired longtime school librarian in Bettsville, Ohio, and a mother of three, died of Alzheimer's disease Sunday in her home here.

Mrs. Ellis retired in 1998 from the Bettsville Local Schools after 24 years as a librarian.

Before working for the school district, she was a secretary at the former Basic Credit Union in Bettsville for several years.

"She loved being a librarian, working with children," her husband, William Ellis VII said.

"She was held in very high regard. She was never spoken ill of and she never spoke ill of anyone," her husband said.

Mrs. Ellis was especially proud of her four grandchildren, two of whom are students at Ohio State University, and two of whom graduated from the school.

Her three sons are also Ohio State graduates, Mr. Ellis said.

A native of Toledo, Mrs. Ellis, whose maiden name was Timerman, graduated in 1952 from Whitmer High School in Toledo as the class valedictorian.

She later graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in library science in 1974 from Bowling Green State University, and five years later received a master's degree in education there. Mrs. Ellis was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.

In her free time, Mrs. Ellis enjoyed sewing and traveling.

Surviving are her husband of 53 years, William Ellis VII; sons, William VIII, James, and Donald; brother, Carl Timerman, and four grandchildren.

Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today at the Engle-Shook Funeral Home in Green Springs, Ohio. There will be no funeral services.

The family suggests tributes to Community Hospice Care, Tiffin, or to the National Alzheimer's Association.
