MONROE - Sue Ann Johns, 72, a former longtime Monroe Township clerk and a co-owner of a Monroe construction firm, died of apparent heart failure on Monday at Harborside Healthcare - Sylvania.

Mrs. Johns resigned as the township clerk in 1998 after 22 years in office. She was also a former vice chairman of the Monroe County Democratic Party. In 2004, she unsuccessfully ran for township supervisor.

"She was very generous, very giving," daughter Lisa Morrison-Bowles said.

"She just always wanted to help people, and that's what made her serving in an elected office so rewarding."

Mrs. Johns resigned to help run LSLSJ Inc., a Monroe construction firm that she and her husband, Lee Johns, owned.

Mrs. Johns did accounting for the firm, her daughter said. The firm has offered residential remodel work in the Monroe area for more than 35 years, according to its Web site.

A native of Xenia, Ohio, Mrs. Johns, who had a high-school diploma, attended the University of Toledo.

In her free time, Mrs. Johns enjoyed entertaining friends in her Monroe home, her daughter said.

Her memberships included the Avalon Beach Association, Monroe, of which she was a former officer.

Surviving are her husband of nearly 42 years, Lee Johns; son, R. Scott Johns; daughter, Lisa Morrison-Bowles, and a sister, Margaret Raylene Hamilton.

Services will begin at 11 a.m. today at Rupp Funeral Home, Monroe.

The family suggests tributes to the Humane Society of Monroe County.
