Ex-market owner valued customers
3/7/2009TEMPERANCE - Rose M. Kaiser, 82, co-owner for nearly 30 years with her late husband, Don, of an Erie Township market that sold produce and plants, died Monday in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center after a stroke.
The couple retired in the early 1990s from Kaiser's Gardens, on Dixie Highway and Sterns Road, when they sold the property.
Open daily May through October, they sold fruits and vegetables, most of which they grew. They also had greenhouses in which they raised bedding plants.
"She had been a city girl, but she adjusted to the farm life," sister-in-law Diane Kaiser said. "She enjoyed all the hours of the market because she loved people."
Her brother-in-law Richard Kaiser added: "She really had an enthusiasm for it."
Earlier, her husband and brother-in-law worked for their father's wholesale produce business. Richard Kaiser and his wife went on to run Kaiser's Market in Temperance.
Mrs. Kaiser sang in the resurrection choir of her church, Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Temperance. She also was a member of the Bedford Senior Center.
She was a 1945 graduate of DeVilbiss High School and had been a secretary for the Bostwick-Braun Co.
She and her husband married Sept. 8, 1955. He died March 15, 1999.
Surviving is her stepdaughter, Marie Kaiser.
The body will be in the Michael W. Pawlak Funeral Home, Temperance, after 2 p.m. tomorrow. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, where the body will be after 10 a.m.
The family suggests tributes to a charity of the donor's choice.
