8/10/2009

Carl R. Trompeter, 85, a devoted Central Catholic High School alumnus who worked for 35 years at what is now Sunoco Inc., died Saturday at University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio.

The Toledo native, who had a heart attack in June, died of respiratory failure, said one of his sons, Stephen Trompeter.

Until his heart attack, however, Mr. Trompeter swam and was otherwise active, he said.

Mr. Trompeter was born on Dec. 21, 1923, to Alois and B. Margaret (Linsenbold) Trompeter.

He graduated in 1942 from Central Catholic, after which he joined the U.S. Navy to fight in World War II.

His wartime service was as an aircraft tail gunner, and he performed most of his duty in the Pacific in the Naval Air Transport Service.

In 1949, Mr. Trompeter graduated from the University of Toledo's college of business.

He worked at the former Sun Oil Co. refinery on the East Toledo/Oregon border until he retired as a purchasing agent.

"He did enjoy his work there at Sun Oil," his son said. "He was able to work up the ladder."

Mr. Trompeter and his wife, Gertrude Trompeter, raised four sons. His wife died in 2003.

When his boys were in Scouts, Mr. Trompeter was actively involved, his son said.

He volunteered at Central Catholic even after they graduated, working on alumni association activities, Mr. Trompeter said.

Camping was a common family pastime, with many summers spent at a former Sun Oil employee recreation area near Genoa, Mr. Trompeter said.

"We did a lot of camping, a lot of traveling out West," he said. "It was a great place to go."

Mr. Trompeter enjoyed golfing, and among other activities, he was a member of St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Church, the Toledo Swiss Society, Maumee Eagles Aerie No. 2562, and other groups.

Surviving are sons, James, Patrick, Stephen, and Daniel; 11 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation is from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Bersticker-Scott Funeral Home, 3453 Heath-

erdowns Blvd.

The funeral will begin at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Church, 4201 Heatherdowns Blvd.

The family suggests tributes to St. Ursula Academy Sister Anne Louis Stoelzel scholarship, which is in honor of his late sister-in-law, or to Central Catholic High School.
