Services set for Maumee native, Heisman winner

Visiting hours and memorial services have been set for Dick Kazmaier, the Maumee native who as a Princeton halfback won the Heisman Trophy in 1951. He died Thursday in Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston.

Mr. Kazmaier, 82, of Concord, Mass., had heart and lung disease, said Bob Ruxin, president of Mr. Kazmaier’s investment and financial consulting business, Kazmaier Associates.

His senior year at Maumee High School, Mr. Kazmaier scored 111 points on the gridiron. He received high school letters in football, basketball, baseball, track, and golf. He was recruited by 23 colleges, but chose Princeton University. He led that school’s football team to undefeated seasons his junior and senior years. He received the Heisman his senior year, becoming the last Ivy Leaguer to win that trophy as the nation’s outstanding college football player.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia Kazmaier, whom he married June 20, 1953; daughters Michelle Kazmaier, Kimberly Picard, Susan Kazmaier, Kathy Donnelly, and Kristen Kazmaier-Fisher; eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. His daughter Patricia Kazmaier Sandt was 28 when she died in 1990 of a blood disease.

Visiting hours are to be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday in Concord Funeral Home, Concord, Mass. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Aug. 23 in St. Anne’s in-the-Fields Episcopal Church, Lincoln, Mass.

The family suggests tributes to the football program at Princeton or the development office at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
