Free fair to teach about fraud, ID theft

6/20/2007

A free program to help educate the public about identity theft and other types of fraudulent behavior is to take place in Oregon on Saturday.

The Security Awareness Fair is to take place from 9 to 11 a.m. at Fifth Third Bank Center, 3739 Navarre Ave., in the Wal-Mart plaza.

Those who attend can shred their documents in a 28-foot shredding truck owned by Iron Mountain Inc.

The records-management and data-protection company suggests shredding pre-1998 tax documents along with old bank statements, credit-card statements, and checks.

Fifth Third Bank is sponsoring the event with Iron Mountain, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and McAfee Inc.

Participants also will be able to test their passwords' effectiveness against password-cracking software at Fifth Third's information security booth.

The Postmaster General will offer information on types of fraud that are perpetrated through the U.S. Postal System, including identity theft and counterfeit postal money orders.

The fair will be open to all residents and business owners in the area.

Reservations are not required.
