Legendary hurdler to speak in Genoa
4/9/2008A legendary track and field athlete will be the keynote speaker at a brunch in Genoa on April 27.
World-class hurdler Mamie Rallins, who was a member of the 1968 and 1972 U.S. Olympic teams, will speak at the Father-Son Brunch at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Hall at noon. The hall is located at 204 Main St. in Genoa.
Rallins was a trendsetter for female and African-American track and field athletes.
In 1968, at age 27, Rallins won an AAU title in the 200-meter hurdle and was ranked No. 1 in the event in the country. In 1969, Rallins set a world record in the 50-meter hurdle.
At the age of 30, she was awarded a full scholarship to Tennessee State University. In 1972, as a member of the U.S. Olympic team, Rallins set records in the 50-yard hurdles, 60-yard hurdles, and 70-yard hurdles.
In 1976, Rallins was hired by Ohio State University as the first coach for the school's women's track and cross country teams. She also was the first African-American head coach in OSU's history. She coached at Ohio State for 18 years. Rallins also served as one of the coaches of the 1996 and 2000 U.S. Olympics track teams.

SOFTBALL: Springfield High School senior Meagan Price has accepted a $5,000 academic scholarship from Bluffton University.
Price earned the college's President's Award, which will allow her to pursue both her academic goals of obtaining a premed degree and continue her athletic career.
Price, a catcher, earned first team-all Northern Lakes League honors last year as a junior. She also was named the team's defensive MVP.
Price hit .277 with eight runs batted in and scored six runs.
SWIMMING: The Bowling Green Swim Club recently won a team title at the Ohio Junior Olympic championships.
The BG swim club took first place in the short course meet at Cincinnati's St. Xavier High School March 14-16. The swimmers beat out a team from Findlay by 186.5 points to win the small club division.
The club also broke 20 team records at the elite event and claimed five individual titles.
Peter Burroughs was named the Outstanding Male Swimmer of the meet. He captured three titles at the meet in the 11-12-year-old division. Burroughs won the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:06.57, setting a meet record. Burroughs also won the 200 freestyle (1:55.79) and 200 individual medley (2:12.54).
In the 10-and-under competition, Emmy Sehmann won the 200 freestyle in 2:12.44.
The club's 10 and-under-freestyle relay team also took first place. Sehmann was joined by Hannah Keiser, Alyssa Decker, and Adrienne Kinor on the team that set a club record (1:56.94).
TENNIS: Central Catholic High School senior tennis players Tom Dever and Todd Siedlecki recently received scholarship awards.
Dever and Siedlecki earned the Gold Racquet scholar-athlete awards from the Ohio Tennis Coaches' Association. The award promotes academic and athletic achievement.
To qualify for the Gold Award, a student-athlete must be a senior who has earned two varsity letters in tennis and has maintained at least a 3.75 grade point average over six semesters.
AUTO RACING: Owens Community College held its annual Lincoln Motorsports Welding Night on April 3.
An array of racing vehicles, including a NASCAR Craftsman truck, a NHRA modified drag car, a NTPA Super Stock tractor, an ARCA truck and a modified 4x4 truck were on display.
Attendees also learned about careers within the welding and automotive industries at the event. Welding demonstrations also took place.
BASEBALL: The Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central baseball team will hold an alumni game May 10.
The game will take place at the Falcons' new home field at the Monroe Township Hall Complex. The game will take place at 1 p.m. and will be followed by a steak roast at the Palmer Room.
