Northwood gets 40 resumes for city administrator's post

Northwood has received 40 resumes from candidates interested in filling the position of city administrator.

"That's a pretty good number, but I figured we'd get about that many," Mayor Mark Stoner said. Interviews of four applicants were set for the week of July 16, he said.

The administrator's job pays $77,288 annually. It has been vacant since May 14, when Dennis Recker abruptly retired. Since then, police Chief Tom Cairl has been filling in, and his captain, Jeff Zahradnik, has handled additional police duties.

The hopefuls include Brad Peebles, former Toledo economic development commissioner; Lake Township Trustee Melanie Bowen; former Walbridge village councilman Jerry Eversman; and Pam Haynam, an ex-member of the Sylvania school board. Chief Cairl said no target date had been set for bringing a new administrator on board.

At its regular meeting last week, council set new salaries for city managers and others that reflect a 1 percent pay raise. The city officials also will receive a lump-sum bonus of 2.25 percent of their salary this month. The positions and new salaries are:

Police chief -- $75,000.

Fire chief -- $26,260.

Director of public service -- $63,260.

Finance and revenue director -- $67,700.

Clerk of court -- $50,078.

Planning and zoning coordinator -- $45,450.

Police captain -- $65,808.

Getting the same percentage raise are the baseball commissioner and Web site coordinator, whose annual pay will be $6,218 and $2,497 respectively. The crossing guard's hourly wage increases to $10.06 and the deputy court clerk's goes to $20.44.

In other business, council authorized a $42,543 premium payment to Wells Fargo Insurance Services for property and liability coverage and authorized the fire chief to apply for a $400,000 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for a new fire truck.

Councilman Mike Myers, who heads council's finance panel, reported that the city stood to lose about $120,000 in payroll tax revenue over six months because of layoffs at Johnson Controls Inc.
