Lima plant awarded vehicle-armor contract

6/8/2007

LIMA The Joint Systems Manufacturing Center, formerly the Lima Tank plant, has won a contract to install a new type of armor on U.S. Army Stryker combat vehicles.

The cage-like armor, which is made with one-inch slats, is meant to reduce damage from attacks by rocket-propelled grenades but is lighter than the usual solid

metal plates.

General Dynamics, which operates the plant jointly with the federal government, announced the $54 million contract yesterday. The work will be completed by June 30, 2008.

It is not expected to create jobs at the factory, which employs about 800.
