AKRON — Ohio-based Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. is ready to begin looking at locations for a new $500 million tire plant.

The company says the search is wide open and it will consider sites in North and South America.

Goodyear announced this past week that it will build a state-of-the-art factory that will make about 6 million tires each year. The company hopes to decide on a site by early next year and have the plant operating in 2017.

State officials in Columbus won’t say whether they’ve had talks with Goodyear about putting the plant within Ohio.

The tire maker says it’s too early to say how many people the new factory might employ.

Goodyear’s website says the company manufactures its products in 51 facilities in 22 countries.
