Springfield teachers, board declare impasse

12/9/2000

The Springfield Local board of education and the union representing district teachers declared an impasse yesterday in negotiations on a new contract. The old one expired Dec. 1.

Norman Brettel, president of the Springfield Education Association, said the impasse was reached after a four-hour bargaining session yesterday. "They were unable to make any financial offer, so .. there was not a lot to go on after that,'' Mr. Brettel said.

School district officials could not be reached for comment.

The teachers' union extended its old contract five months ago to give the board an opportunity to pass a new operating levy. However, voters last month turned down the 8.9-mill tax proposal.

The starting teacher salary in the Springfield Local district is $24,910 a year, Mr. Brettel said.
