Local charter school takes in Aurora students

Most of the 46 students who were released from Aurora Academy charter school when it eliminated its high school program last month have enrolled at the Family Learning Center, another charter school.

Jerri Heer, co-director of the Family Learning Center, said 28 students out of the 46 formerly in Aurora were in school yesterday when the fourth quarter began following spring break.

Family Learning Center, which opened in the fall for grades seven through 11, has an enrollment of 146.

Aurora Academy, located in East Toledo, in March notified 46 students in grades nine through 12 that the high school program was being discontinued.

The students were offered enrollment in Family Learning Center, based in the Macomber Building in downtown Toledo.

The students' last day at Aurora was March 23.

The school had expected all 46 students to enroll at Family Learning Center. However, Toledo Public Schools made an effort to recruit some of the students.

TPS officials yesterday could not say yesterday how many, if any, of the former Aurora students were offered places in district high schools.

Aurora director Martu Fleishman said Aurora realized it was not equipped to offer a kindergarten through 12th grade program. She said the students were encouraged to transfer as a group to the Family Learning Center. FLC's co-directors are former employees of Aurora.
