TPS Foundation awards $8,365 in grants

The Toledo Public Schools Foundation has issued its first grants, totaling $8,365, Executive Director Susan Zurawski announced yesterday.

Antonio Butler, a student at the Frank Dick Natural Science Technology Center, will receive a $1,000 scholarship from the Frank and Shirley Dick Scholarship to attend Ohio State University's Agricultural Technical Institute.

Albert Salinas Dominguez, a sixth grader at Sherman Elementary School, will receive $2,000 toward the college of his choice from the Merrill A Grant Sherman School Scholarship Fund in 2007, provided he graduates from Sherman and a high school in theToledo Public School system.

Scholarships of $1,500 each were awarded to Janell Scott, the valedictorian at Scott High School, for Ohio State University, and Evan Staunton, a senior at Scott High School, for Howard University in Washington. Teachers who received awards to fund projects are Jody Bunn, King Elementary, and Diane Micham and Chad Henderly, Washington Kindergarten Center.

The foundation, set up in 1999 to enhance teaching and learning in the schools, has collected more than $600,000 in charitable contributions for its endowment.
