Candidate rebuffs offer for UT faculty position

5/11/2001

After successfully arguing for permission to hire an additional faculty member, the women's and gender studies department at the University of Toledo has failed to land its top candidate for the job.

Dr. Sanjam Ahluwalia, a visiting professor at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, has accepted an offer to continue in her current position, according to Dr. Jamie Barlowe, chairwoman of the UT department.

UT's offer was delayed when it initially was denied by Interim Provost William Free, who contended that UT could not afford the position. That stand was reversed following a protest by department supporters and a decision that resources in the college of arts and sciences could be shifted to accommodate the position.

“The unnecessary delay cost us the best candidate for our department,” Dr. Barlowe said, adding that the department now is considering other candidates.
