Bowling Green youth honored

Ryan Shafer, a National Merit Scholarship finalist and 2001 graduate of Bowling Green High School, has been awarded a full-tuition scholarship by the University of Dayton. The award will cover the cost of his undergraduate tuition for four years at the university.

Ryan was a member of the National Honor Society, the German Honor Society, and the student activities board in high school. He was also a member of the marching and symphonic bands and co-captain of the quiz bowl team. He was a delegate to the U.S. Youth Program in Washington and served as state treasurer at Buckeye Boys State 2000.

He plans to major in international studies.

Grant Christensen, a 2001 graduate of Sylvania Northview High School, has received a University Scholars scholarship from the University of Richmond. The half-tuition award is valued at $11,285 for 2001-2002 and is renewable for four years.

Grant was president of the National Honor Society and speech and debate clubs during his senior year. He competed in the National Speech and Debate Tournament the past three years and placed fourth nationally in impromptu speaking at this year's tournament. He is the son of Tom and Pamela Christensen of Toledo.
