High schoolers ask TPS chief about menus, field-trip policy

Toledo high school students had a chance to raise issues with Superintendent Eugene Sanders yesterday during a forum called “Conversation with the Superintendent.”

For a little over an hour, Dr. Sanders discussed issues, such as proficiency tests, the district's building program, and how to get parents more involved. He did much of the talking, providing background on the topics and soliciting input from the students.

Eighteen students from five high schools attended. Each of the district's high schools was invited to send about five representatives to the Thurgood Marshall Building on Manhattan Boulevard. They asked about cancellation of field trips after the events of Sept. 11, improving lunch menus, and state law regarding the transportation of athletes to sporting events.

Libbey student Keitha West said she hopes such meetings will reap widespread benefits. “If we come here and talk with him and go back and tell our peers, maybe they'll want to get involved,” she said.
