College-prep plan lands gift of $50,000

4/2/2002

BOWLING GREEN - A partnership between Bowling Green State University and the Toledo Public School District to help prepare East Toledo youths for college has received a $50,000 boost from the Toledo Community Foundation.

The contribution will supplement the nearly $4.7 million federal Gear Up grant that BGSU received in 2000 to work at East Toledo Junior High School, university officials said.

Gear Up stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs and focuses on reforming schools, offering professional development for teachers, and relaying scholarship information to parents and students.

The Toledo Community Foundation's gift will support the services and programs provided by the East Toledo Family Center in conjunction with Gear Up.
