Spankout Day to urge ban on corporal punishment

4/27/2002

Corporal punishment is steadily declining in Ohio public schools, but organizers of Spankout Day on Tuesday hope it disappears.

"We urge Ohio teachers to put down the paddle and look for better ways to manage student behavior," said Nadine Block, director of the Center for Effective Discipline in Columbus.

Thirty-one Ohio districts allow corporal punishment. None is in northwest Ohio.

A study by the center found 13 percent fewer students received corporal punishment in 2000-2001 than during the 1999-2000 school year.
