Ivy Haskins - Monroe High School

Ivy Haskins, a senior from Monroe, plans to attend the University of Michigan to pursue a degree in medicine. Her favorite subjects are math and science, and she has a 4.19 grade-point average.

Ivy won the title of 2003-2004 Miss Junior America, has achieved all-league and all-county in swimming, and is recipient of the varsity award in swimming for grades 9-12.

She is a member of the varsity swim team, National Honor Society, student council, Renaissance club, Spanish club, and pep club. She is class senator.

Ivy has participated in the United Way Silver Lining Walk, the March of Dimes Walk, and the Crop Walk; tutors elementary and high school students, and has helped make teddy bears for abused and battered children of Monroe County.

"I have found Ivy to be a self-motivated, goal-oriented young woman," said Nancy Monday, chairman of the counseling department. "She is the type of student that makes me proud to be an educator. She will make her mark in this world, and we will all be the better for it."

Ivy is the daughter of Mark Haskins of Lambertville.

Jamie Pinkelman, a senior from Berkey, plans to attend either Eastern Michigan University to major in interior design or the University of Toledo to major in marketing. Her favorite subjects are math and computer art, and she has a 4.035 grade-point average.

Jamie has received numerous baton twirling awards such as senior regional dance-twirl champion and head majorette.

She is a member of the National Honor Society and concert band, and is a majorette. She is statistician for the baseball team and was on the student levy committee. She serves as president of the Metamora Friendly 4-Hers and Metamora United Methodist Youth Group.

She is a member of the Evergreen Twirling Sensations and works for Carter Lumber and the HMH Wellness Center.

"Jamie is a very bright student who combines intellect with a strong work ethic," teacher Brian Nagy said. "She is a self-motivated individual with a desire to understand why and not just how. Jamie is able to combine a very active extracurricular schedule with excellence in the classroom. I know she will be successful in her future plans and is a credit to her family and community."

She is the daughter of Dave and Cynthia Pinkelman.

Sean Daugherty, a senior from the Swanton area, plans to attend Ohio Northern University, majoring in computer engineering. He is the salutatorian and has a 4.383 grade-point average.

Sean was a National Merit finalist, October Maumee Elks student of the month, student of the year in geography, and May, 2004, Holland-Springfield Rotary student of the month. He is a member of the National Honor Society, track and Varsity S and the cross-country team.

Sean has participated in mission trips to Denver and Nashville, served dinners at St. Paul's Community Center and Solid Rock Church, and given tech support and participated in the worship team at Washington Church.

"Sean is the most accurate and intuitive mathematics student I have ever had in my nearly 20 years of teaching," advanced placement calculus teacher James Howe said. "I count it a privilege to have coached him in wrestling and helped him grow mathematically from honors geometry to finishing Honors Calculus III at the University of Toledo."

Sean is the son of David and Darlene Daugherty.

Alyson Turner, a senior from Northwood, plans to attend the University of Findlay and receive a degree as a physician's assistant. She also plans to continue her athletic involvement as a pitcher by playing Division II softball there.

Alyson's career goal is to work as a physician's assistant for two years before she enters medical school to pursue a career as an orthopedic surgeon. Her favorite subjects are English, government, and science, and she has a 3.919 grade-point average.

Alyson has maintained high honor roll status since her freshman year, is recipient of the presidential award - a $10,000 academic award toward her tuition at Findlay - and she is a black belt in Taekwondo. She is a member of the National Honor Society and a class officer.

Alyson has completed service hours by working at the Cherry Street Mission Soup Kitchen and participating in cleaning up the neighborhood through litter pick-up.

"Alyson is a perfectionist, and the quality of her work bears that out," Kris James, English teacher and yearbook adviser, said. "As a member of the yearbook staff, Aly's attention to detail has been invaluable - so much so that nothing leaves the office without her checking it first."

Alyson is the daughter of Jeff and Sharon Turner.

Joseph Kupa, a senior from Petersburg, has worked hard to accomplish one his goals - breaking a track record. In his sophomore year, Joseph was only 7 seconds away from the 4:36 mile record but is still working on reaching his goal.

He was most valuable player as a sophomore and a junior and most improved player as a freshman. His junior year, he made all-region in cross-country. He is on the honor roll and is recipient of the keyboarding award. He is active in weightlifting and "Survival of the Fittest."

Joseph plans to attend Eastern Michigan University in the fall to study computer information systems while continuing to run track. His favorite subjects are math, gym, computer, and science, and he has a 3.3 grade-point average.

"Joseph's the kind of guy you love to coach," Summerfield track coach Ryan Lefevre said. "He works hard and has a great attitude. The example he sets intensifies practice and makes the team better."

Joseph is the son of Michael and Cheri Kupa.

Steven Whitlow, a senior from Toledo, plans to attend Hillsdale College, majoring in international business while playing football and running track. He enjoys Advanced Placement History, economics, and accounting.

Steven is recipient of the Toledo Christian School Joshua ward, was chosen this year's homecoming king, and is a member of the National Honor Society. He plays varsity football, runs track, plays basketball and baseball, and is president of student council and a member of the Cedar Creek youth group leadership team. He coaches elementary flag football and helps on the Chris Meyers campaign for state representative.

"Steve is not only a gifted student and athlete, but also a gifted leader," teacher and coach Don Dressel said. "He has the ability to not only get the job done, but he is also capable of 'rallying the troops,' regardless of his surroundings: in the classroom, on the athletic field, or in leading the student body of Toledo Christian en masse!

Steven is the son of Steve and Julie Whitlow.

Ryan Fisher, a senior from Sylvania, is a two sport athlete: tennis and soccer. He achieved second-team all-league in 2002 and first-team all-league in 2003 in tennis and an honorable mention in 2003 in soccer. He is a four-year letter winner in varsity tennis and is a member of the 2003 National Lakes League championship soccer and tennis teams.

Ryan is on the honor roll and enjoys recreational basketball, snowboarding, and various water sports. His favorite subjects are math and computer, and he has a 3.0 grade-point average.

Ryan is planning to attend the University of Toledo, majoring in computer or civil engineering.

"Ryan is an outstanding ambassador for Northview High School," athletic director Larry Jones said, "both on the athletic field and in the classroom."

He is the son of Mark and Cheryl Fisher.

Heather Beck, a junior from Millbury, is the school record holder for the indoor-outdoor long jump and the 60-meter indoor dash. She is all-TAAC in the 200-meter, regional qualifier in the long jump and 100-meter dash, and was named most valuable runner for Maumee Valley in 2003. In field hockey, Heather is part of the futures program and was the second leading scorer for Maumee Valley's quarterfinalist team in 2003.

Heather has received high honors for five semesters and is a member of the Maumee Valley Honor Society. She is head editor of the yearbook, student council representative, community service club member, and has done volunteer work in Mexico and Ethiopa. She has completed an internship with the New York State Legislature, works as a second-grade camp counselor during the summer, and volunteers for En Camino Migrant Ministries, tutoring English and teaching first-communion class. She enjoys U.S. history and Spanish and has a 4.0 grade-point average.

Heather plans to major in international relations and Latin American studies with a minor in economics.

"Heather is a natural athlete, a natural sprinter," said Margaret Blackburn, track coach and chairman of the foreign language department. "She is dedicated and loyal to her sports, and she is very responsive to good coaching. She is in essence what every coach looks for in an athlete."

Heather is the daughter of Patrick and Mary Beck.
