7/28/2004Jessica Vogel of Toledo was a state finalist in the National American Miss Ohio Pageant recently held in Columbus. The pageant was for girls ages 10 to 12. Jessica will be in the sixth grade this fall at St. Joan of Arc School.
Barrett Dorner, who will be a junior at Perrysburg High School in the fall, has received an honorable mention for a video documentary he produced, "Concealed Carry Concerns." Students nationwide submitted 700 entries on policy issues regularly discussed on the public affairs network C-SPAN for the national contest, Campaign Cam, sponsored by C-SPAN and C-SPAN in the Classroom.
Barrett interviewed a local member of the National Rifle Association as well as two Toledo police patrolmen for his documentary. His award included a $500 cash prize.
Local Navy reservist Capt. Elisabeth Wolfe of Toledo will take part in a West African Training Cruise for two weeks in Senegal, West Africa, as part of a medical outreach and humanitarian assistance program the U.S. Navy has conducted in West Africa over a number of years.
Capt. Wolfe will be one of about 60 U.S. military personnel on the Naval Fleet Hospital Ft. Dix, holding joint training and medical information exchange with Senegal and providing medical treatment in eight villages for up to 15,000 people.

Retired businessman and retired U.S. Navy Capt. William Kopper of Toledo, has been elected national vice president of the Navy League of the United States. The election was held at the Navy League convention held recently in San Diego, Calif.
He will be responsible for membership services and marketing worldwide of the Navy League, which is a citizens' organization that supports all U.S. sea services.
Capt. Kopper previously served as the league's Ohio Area president and was president of its Toledo-Erie Islands Council in 1989 and 1998.
He has held administrative positions at Standard Oil Company's Toledo regional office, the IBM Corporation, and most recently was vice president of strategic marketing for the software publishing firm, Braun, Simmons & Co. of Toledo.
A Cleveland native, Capt. Kopper moved to Toledo in 1964. He is a graduate of Bowling Green State University. His new offices will be at Navy League headquarters in Arlington, Va.

Vikrum Vora, who will be a senior at Sylvania Southview High School this fall, was chosen to attend the Gillette Company Economics for Leaders program held July 19 to 26 at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. The program combined economics and leadership training for 30 students from around the country. It is co-sponsored by the Foundation for Teaching Economics, based in Davis, Calif.

Meredith Harris, a student at Notre Dame Academy, was chosen to attend a People to People Leadership Summit being held this week in Fort Collins, Colo., for students with outstanding academic and leadership qualities.
The summit focuses on educational and professional careers through workshops, excursions, discussions, and lectures. The program is coordinated by the People to People Ambassador Programs.

Clare Thomasy of Maumee has been selected by Coastal Carolina University to be listed as an outstanding campus leader in the annual directory of students, Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

Three members of the Ohio State University Extension, Lucas County 4-H Youth Development Program will attend special programs for youth members.
Amy Hannum, of the Ropin' Wrangler 4-H Club, received an award that pays for travel, meals and lodging to attend the Citizenship Washington Focus program at the National 4-H Center June 20-26.
Andrew Reimer, a member of the Swan Creek Cygnets Club, and teen volunteer Reva McVay, received costs to attend the Ohio 4-H Youth Expo held at Ohio State University.
The awards were made by the 4-H Advisory Council.
