Swanton moves to return levy to ballot

8/10/2004

SWANTON - The Swanton Board of Education yesterday took the first of two steps towards placing a levy renewal issue, defeated last week by voters, back on the ballot.

The board voted 3-0 to ask the auditor to certify the millage needed for the levy. Swanton Superintendent Kevin McQuade said he anticipates it would be the same amount requested last week. Board members Doug Lee and Catherine Kline were absent.

By a narrow margin, voters turned down a three-year levy that is collected at an effective rate of 4.34 mills. The levy generates $825,000 a year. The board may vote Monday to put the issue on the ballot.
