Thirty-one people, including several lawyers, a manager at the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station, and a Lucas County probation officer, have applied for Toledo Public Schools' ombudsman position.
The person who fills the post will be responsible for reviewing and responding to complaints lodged against the district; serve as a mediator; conduct periodic surveys, and accomplish other duties. School officials pledged during last year's levy campaign to have the job filled by the first day of classes Aug. 31.
The salary for the job is listed as not more than $30,000 a year.
Superintendent Eugene Sanders said the district had a similar post during the 1970s and '80s.
Sheila Austin, the district's chief of staff, said yesterday the position will be filled before September.
"We are screening applicants now and will have a recommendation," she said. "The person will mediate between the district and the community."
