10/20/2004The Oregon-Clay FFA agronomy team competed Sept. 30 in Oak Harbor in the District One Agronomy Career Development event. Ashley Reichert placed first, Reid Plumb placed second, and Jason Cline came in third.
Crystal Vargas came fourth, Chris Pollauf was fifth, April Henneman placed sixth, Mandy Hansen placed seventh, and Cameron Phillips came in eighth.
Overall, the team won first place. Other team members included Eric Pirolli, Brian Drouillard, Alex Teneyck, Jim McGill, Angela La Force, Amanda Perry, Nate Renolds, Kyle Barry, Josh Nolan, Joe St. John, and Oliver Teneyck.
The team will compete in the state contest in spring 2005.

Tom Meyers of Toledo, a student at St. Francis de Sales High School, was selected to attend the National Young Leaders State Conference held earlier this month in Columbus. The conference is a leadership development program for promising ninth grade students. It helps them plan a leadership role that will make the best use of their individual talents and skills.

Anita Lopez, a member of the Toledo board of education and an attorney in Toledo's department of taxation, was honored at the 2004 Distinguished Hispanic Ohioan recognition luncheon held Oct. 14 in Columbus.
In September, she received the Chairman's Eagle Award from the Ohio Civil Rights Commission for her work in the community and on the Toledo board of education. She is chairman of the board's human resources development committee and vice chairman of the finance and business operations committee. Ms. Lopez began her four-year term on the board in January 2002.

Kalena Rofkar of Toledo has been selected a member of the 2004 Homecoming Court at Kent State University, where she is a senior in the college of education. A resident assistant, she is sponsored by the National Residence Hall Honorary. She is also a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society and Kappa Delta Pi, and is a graduate of Whitmer High School.

Five teachers from Central Catholic High School attended a six-day summer conference for educators at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire.
Science teachers Ann Hajibrahim and Kathy Wilkens, math teacher Peg Huntebrinker, and English teachers Adele Dahlin and Judy Siferd attended courses and listened to keynote speakers on new ways to present ideas in the classroom.
About 25 English teachers and over 300 math and science teachers attended from across the country. The Central Catholic teachers' attendance was funded by a grant from the Stranahan Foundation.
