Genoa: Summer classes offered in district

Genoa Area Local Schools will begin offering summer school classes for its students who in the past have had to travel to Oregon and Fremont for summer instruction.

Any student who fails science, English, or health and physical education will now be able to take make-up summer classes at Genoa Area High School, Superintendent Dennis Mock said. The district previously did not offer summer school.

In the past, Genoa students had to attend summer sessions at schools outside the district at a cost, Mr. Mock said.

"The cost at the other schools has gotten much higher for parents here to afford sending their children," he said.

There will be two summer school sessions starting at Genoa Area High: The first one will run from June 6 to June 21, and the second session will run from June 22 to July 8.

The students will need 60 hours of instruction. The sessions will include students from the ninth through 11th grades. Each class session will have a minimum of 15 students and will cost $120 per student.

The district will have enough money to pay for summer school teachers through the fees raised for the summer program. Officials anticipate a higher demand for summer school.

The district has also reduced the number of periods from eight to seven, which makes it more difficult for students to get all their elective classes completed and they can complete them over the summer.

The school board set the 2005-2006 calendar at its meeting last week. Classes will begin Aug. 23 and end May 26, with calamity make-up days scheduled through June 5. Winter recess will be from Dec. 22 through Jan. 2, and spring recess will be from April 10 through April 14.
