Cardinal Stritch High to unveil $1.5M capital improvement plan

6/15/2005

Officials at Cardinal Stritch High School today will announce a $1.5 million capital improvement project, a $30,000 upgrade to athletic facilities, and a new strategic vision.

The officials will make their announcements at a news conference in the main entry foyer of the school, 3225 Pickle Rd.

The capital improvement project is aimed at making the school more energy-efficient. Included will be upgraded plumbing, windows, and lights, said Michael Gocsik, Stritch's vice president of institutional advancement.

"We've done minor things here and there, but really, this is the largest project that has been done," he said.

Plumbing work began June 2. Pipes that date to the 1960s have become corroded and need to be replaced. There will also be new restroom sinks and locker room showers.

About 200 double-pane, energy-efficient windows will be installed as well as new window shades in all classrooms, offices, and the gym.

Lighting fixtures will get energy-efficient bulbs.

In addition, a new roof will be installed on the school building, chapel, and gym; parking-space lines will be painted onto a newly resealed parking lot, and new chapel seats and kneelers will be installed.

The work will be done with a loan from the Toledo diocese, Mr. Gocsik said.

All work, excluding the windows, will be done by the first day of school, which is Aug. 18. The windows are to be done by the end of September.

The officials also will unveil a smaller project to beef up the entryway to the athletic fields. Included will be a ticket booth and scoreboards.

That project is expected to cost $30,000 and will be funded through bequests the school received from Walter Moore, a longtime coach at Stritch, and the Rev. Tom Quinn, a former director of communications for the Toledo diocese, Mr. Gocsik said.

The new strategic vision will outline the school's commitment to being uniquely affordable today and uniquely Catholic for the future.
