7/15/2005

The Toledo Plan Commission yesterday approved a special-use permit for the new Byrnedale Middle School building, which will be built behind Brynedale Junior High School on Glendale Avenue near Byrne Road.

Members of the commission approved the permit following staff recommendations for the new middle school, which will be for grades six through eight and will be able to house about 551 students.

The commission also approved a special-use permit for Maumee Bay Academy Elementary and Maumee Academy for Excellence Middle School. Both charter schools will be operated by the Leona Group LLC of East Lansing, Mich.

The two charter schools will be at 5509 Dorr St.

The site, which is occupied by a church, will have six classrooms, office space, and a meeting hall/cafeteria.

Leona Group, which runs a number of charter schools in Ohio and around the country, also won approval for a special- use permit for another charter school, the George A. Phillips Academy, which will open in a building at 540 Independence Rd.

The plan commission disapproved two special-use permits, a zone change, and a preliminary drawing for an industrial lot by two developers who sought to use lots on Manhattan Boulevard and South Avenue as auto salvage yards.

In other action, the plan commission approved a major site- plan review by Steve Roumaya, a Toledo-based developer of a new motel, a Fairfield Inn, at 5639 Benore Rd.
