Bedford: Alumni choose six for hall of fame
10/5/2005TEMPERANCE - It took weeks, but a 15-member committee of the Bedford Alumni Association has whittled down a list of three-dozen names to six people who will be inducted this weekend into the Bedford High School Hall of Fame.
Committee member Mary Zaums said the committee had a difficult time selecting nominees this year, but chose a group of inductees who contributed to the school either through athletic achievement or by the instruction they provided to students. The induction banquet will take place Saturday at Memories Banquet Hall in Temperance.
This year's inductees are:
●Robert Boehme, 73, a 1951 graduate and star athlete who played quarterback in football, guard in basketball, and pitcher in baseball. Mr. Boehme led the school to its only undefeated football season in history, and received a letter from Airport High School athletes, coaches, and students identifying him as the greatest adversary they faced between 1948 and 1951.
●Denny Brighton, 49, a 1974 graduate who was a wrestling state champion in 1973 and 1974. In the summer of 1973, Mr. Brighton placed third in his weightclass at the Junior World Olympics, and went on to wrestle at Michigan State University. A former varsity wrestling coach at Whitmer High School, Mr. Brighton returned to his alma mater to take over the program from longtime wrestling coaching legend Bill Regnier, who is now the school's athletic director.
●Gary Duhaime, 70, a retired English teacher at Bedford High School who coached basketball, tennis, and cross country over his 30-year career. Mr. Duhaime led the girls' cross country team to their first state championship in 1982, and led teams in other sports to a number of league and regional titles.
●Lewis Horn, 58, a retired English and Journalism teacher who taught at Bedford High School for 35 years before retiring earlier this year. Mr. Horn served as the school's football coach for 10 years, and was head coach of Bedford's boys track team for 34 years. Mr. Horn is serving a term as president of the Great Lakes Interscholastic Press Association.
●Liz Renius, 28, a 1995 graduate of Bedford, won eight varsity letters in both basketball and volleyball during high school, when she was selected First Team All State in Volleyball both her junior and senior year. Ms. Renius holds a number of individual school records in volleyball and basketball, and went on to play collegiate volleyball on a full athletic scholarship at Northwestern University.
●Gene Stock, 59, a 1964 graduate of Bedford, played on the 1963 varsity baseball team that was the first team in school history to win a Great Lakes League championship in any sport. A charter member of the Bedford Alumni Association, Mr. Stock served as chairman of the committee that conceived of the Bedford Community Stadium. He has continued to work tirelessly to raise the more than $1 million in private donations needed to pay off the loan on the stadium.
