TPS board OKs contracts for new school

The Toledo Board of Education approved more than $5.9 million in contracts Tuesday night for the construction of the new Westfield Elementary.

The general trades contract for nearly $3.2 million was awarded to Willson Builders Inc.

Ron Victor, the school district's acting assistant business manager, said construction on the new school should start April 2 and is scheduled to be completed by July 23, 2008.

The new school, which will house about 350 students in grades kindergarten through five, will be built on the site of the former Westfield Elementary, 617 Western Ave. The old building was razed, Mr. Victor said.

The district's new school construction program is 77 percent funded by the state. The remaining money comes from a local 4.99-mill, 28-year levy school district voters approved in 2002.
