9 teachers in Toledo Catholic Diocese honored for excellence

One high school and eight elementary school teachers in the Toledo Catholic Diocese have received the Golden Apple Award for devoting themselves to Catholic education.

The award recipients include:

•Kathleen Beres, a teacher at St. Peter's Elementary and Montessori schools in Mansfield, Ohio, since 1994. She currently teaches second grade.

•Charlotte Best, who has taught at Central Catholic High School for 35 years. Mrs. Best teaches American and British literature, English, and film study and mass media.

•Melody Curtis, a teacher at All Saints Elementary in Rossford since 2005. She teaches grades two through eight, and recently took on the role of assistant principal.

•Marcia Estep, who has taught second grade at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Elementary for the past 19 years.

•Thomas E. Farrell, a teacher at Lial Catholic School in Whitehouse, where for 11 years he has taught students in fourth, fifth, and sixth grade.

•Louise Hoschak, a Blessed Sacrament Elementary teacher for 30 years. She has taught kindergarten through eighth grade, served as an assistant principal, and is currently the middle school religion teacher.

•Carol Lindsley, a teacher at St. Joseph Elementary, Sylvania. She has taught third grade at the school for 13 years.

•Cindy McLaughlin, who has been teaching since 1979, currently teaches in the Early Childhood Center at Norwalk Catholic School in Norwalk.

•Catherine Ujvagi, a teacher St. Pius X Elementary. She teaches sixth grade math and religion, and science and health in grades six through eight.

Each teacher received $5,000, a certificate, a Golden Apple keepsake, and a lapel pin and was honored with a banquet.
