Old school building sold at auction for $500,000

The former Macomber Vocational High School was auctioned yesterday in a Lucas County sheriff's sale.

AFF Ohio LLC was the only and successful bidder on the property at 1501 Monroe St. for the $500,000 minimum, said Mark Tantari, an attorney who represented the company in the process.

The Macomber building was sold in 1998 to Luttenberger & Co. roofers for $425,000. At the time, Luttenberger was moving from its facility on North Expressway Drive because of the expansion of the Stickney Avenue Jeep Assembly Plant.

Luttenberger went into default on its taxes and mortgage through Fifth Third Bank and a foreclosure suit was filed against the company in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.

Through a legal maneuver, AFF Ohio took over the mortgage from Fifth Third Bank, and the tenants of the building have been paying rent to AFF Ohio, explained Mr. Tantari, who has been involved throughout the process and had represented Fifth Third Bank.

One of the tenants is the Alliance Academy of Toledo charter school.

Mr. Tantari said he did not know what AFF Ohio's intentions are with the building and what might happen to those using the building.

Macomber opened in 1938 and closed in 1991.
