MONROE — Deputy Superintendent Randy Monday was named the new superintendent of Monroe Public Schools Tuesday night.

The board of education voted 6-1 to hire Mr. Monday to replace Superintendent David Taylor. Mr. Monday, who has been employed more than 30 years with the district, will begin his new duties July 1.

Board member Larry VanWasshenova voted against hiring Mr. Monday, saying he wanted the board to pursue a different process for hiring a new superintendent.

A Monroe High graduate, Mr. Monday started at Monroe schools in 1975 as a science teacher at the junior high and became assistant principal at Custer Elementary in 1985.

He was named assistant principal at the high school in 1986, where he served two years. He was principal at the junior high from 1988 to 1995, when he was named assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.
