BGSU announces fall tuition increase

BOWLING GREEN — As Bowling Green State University looks forward to its first significant enrollment increase since 2006, trustees agreed Friday to increase tuition by $164 a semester this fall.

The 3.5 percent increase comes on the heels of a 3.5 percent tuition increase approved last October for the 2010 spring semester.

BGSU President Carol Cartwright said she knows it's still a difficult time financially for many families yet she believes BGSU offers students a quality education at a value. For nearly three years, the university did not increase tuition.

"The years we had zero tuition increases we had improved state support," she said. "When the state could not provide that support this year, they said we understand tuition increases will be forthcoming."

As part of a $283.6 million budget approved for the main campus, trustees agreed to set aside $2.36 million for salary increases for faculty and staff at the Bowling Green and Firelands campuses.

Enrollment in the fall is expected to increase by 4 percent or more that 600 students. Of those, approximately 550 additional freshmen are expected.
