The president of a two-year public institution in North Dakota has been named Owens Community College's next president.

Mike Bower, 62, president of the 3,000-student Lake Region State College in Devils Lake, was the unanimous choice Tuesday of the college's board of trustees to replace Larry McDougle.

College officials said Mr. Bower, who is to take over July 1, has a strong background as an academic leader. He has been at Lake Region, part of the North Dakota University system, since 2008. He previously was at Mott Community College in Flint, Mich., as executive dean for extension campuses/continuing education/corporate services.

He was given a three-year contract paying $200,000 annually. He is to receive a $1,250 monthly housing allowance.

Mr. McDougle moved his retirement date up to Sept. 30 after suffering a heart attack. John Satkowski, Owens' chief financial officer, has been interim president.
