B.G. school board votes to put tax issue on ballot
8/1/2012BOWLING GREEN -- Bowling Green City Schools' income tax would more than double if voters approve a board of education deficit-elimination proposal.
The school board unanimously voted Monday to place an income-tax boost, from 0.5 percent now to 1.25 percent, on the Nov. 6 election ballot. If approved, the tax will yield an estimated $4.05 million a year for five years.
"We really were hopeful we would not have to be on the ballot at all, but the reduction of the tangible personal property reimbursement is really challenging," Superintendent of Schools Ann McVey said. "I feel like we take one step forward and five back with reductions in state funding."
Since 2004, she said, the district has eliminated 33 teaching positions, closed and sold several buildings, and cut two administrative positions.
