Bedford offers quick courses in career fields

Technologies focus on medical fields

TEMPERANCE -- For anyone looking for a quick, lower-cost way to acquire professional training, Bedford Adult Education may be the answer.

It will offer three new programs aimed at getting people into the work force quickly in the jobs of phlebotomy technician, dental assistant, or veterinary assistant.

Successful completion earns a student a certificate, the preparation to take a state or national certification exam if needed, and an "externship," or on-the-job training, explained Cherie Reed, the Bedford Public Schools director of adult education and community enrichment programs.

"This is open to anyone and intended to give people a quick entry into the employment world. The programs are shorter and less expensive," she said.

The courses will be taught by Boston Reed College, of Napa, Calif., which offers adult education training at venues across the country.

All classes will be in the former Smith Road Elementary School, 1135 Smith Rd., in Temperance. All run from 5:30 to 9 p.m.

The dental assistant program begins Oct. 2 and will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays for 14 weeks. The cost is $1,499.

The veterinary assistant classes start Oct. 8 and will be held Mondays and Wednesdays for five weeks. The cost is $1,199. The program trains students to work in a veterinary office or clinic but is a step down from veterinary technician training, Ms. Reed said.

"It's a good way to get started and see if you like the profession," she said.

The phlebotomy program will run for seven weeks on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning Nov. 26. The cost is $1,699.

"It's pretty much clinical lab work, and you have to have a certain number of 'sticks' to earn your certificate of completion," Ms. Reed said.

The costs includes textbooks and supplies.

Students must be at least 18 years old and have a high school degree or its equivalent. The courses are open to anyone, regardless of residency.

Registration is through Boston Reed College at 1-800-201-1141, Ms. Reed said. Information on financial assistance is available as well.
