COLUMBUS — Former Elmore resident Jon Waters has been named the director of the Marching and Athletic Bands at The Ohio State University.

Mr. Waters, who had been the interim director of the bands for the first half of the Ohio State University football season, was granted the title Wednesday by Joseph Steinmetz, dean of the OSU Colleges of Arts and Sciences, and Richard Blatti, director of the OSU School of Music.

The two made the announcement at a band rehearsal in the Joan Zieg Steinbrenner Band Center in Ohio Stadium, according to the university band’s Web site.

Mr. Waters, a Woodmore High School and Ohio State graduate, and a member of the band during his college years, was named interim director of the marching band after the retirement of Jon Woods last spring. The promotion was announced days after a video of the band’s video-game-themed halftime show from the Buckeyes’ Saturday game against Nebraska went viral.

The show had more than 7 million views on YouTube by Wednesday.
