3 Springfield teams in top 4 spots after rough week

In one of the toughest weeks of The Blade’s Annual School Stock Contest, three teams from Springfield High School managed to maintain their forward momentum.

1SHS and 4SHS, both taught by Jennifer Hoel, moved into first and second place, respectively. THEHELP nabbed fourth place. All of the teams managed more than 3.5 percent growth in a week during which many teams moved in the wrong direction.

After eight weeks, the mythical $40,000 portfolios of 15 teams grew at least 10 percent since the contest began. After nine weeks only four can make that statement.

“THEHELP from Springfield High School saw a lot of help last week in their ranking, jumping 11 places from 15th to 4th. Three of their four stock picks had significant market increases last week, leading to a total weekly return of 4.8 percent, the largest increase of all the teams,” Ronald Belle, investment advisers executive and senior vice president at Fifth Third Bank, a contest sponsor, wrote in an email to The Blade.

THEHELP has stock in Yahoo Inc., Apple Inc., Facebook Inc., and Best Buy Co. Inc.

The other two Springfield teams at the top also have Best Buy.

“Best Buy led all with a 14.8 percent increase on recent news of a partnership with Samsung, adding kiosks in [Best Buy] stores,” Mr. Belle wrote.

Ms. Hoel said her students hope they can hang on for the rest of the 12-week contest.

“It’s the Best Buy stock that has really been helping the teams that have been performing well lately,” Ms. Hoel said. “They’re getting a little antsy for it to end while they are at the top.”

The contest has 115 teams from northwest Ohio and southern Michigan participating. They were given a hypothetical $40,000 budget, and the funds were evenly distributed among four stocks, which initially were worth at least $5 a share. Each team had a chance to trade in one or more of their stocks for a different one.

The contest runs through April 26.

The team with the best-performing portfolio will win $250 for the students and $250 for the school. Second place will receive $250 for the school, and third place gets $100 for the school. The contest is sponsored by The Blade’s Newspaper in Education program, the Taylor Automotive Family, Fifth Third, and the University of Toledo, which calculates the results.

Another team that weathered the week was HASBULL, which moved from 11th place to fifth although its portfolio shrank 0.8 percent during the week. Still, HASBULL has grown 9.85 percent since the beginning. The team has stock in Walt Disney Co., Kroger Co., Rue21 Inc., and Cabelas Inc.

Jane Floor, who teaches the fifth-grade members of HASBULL in her gifted math class at Pike-Delta-York Middle School in Delta, said her students picked stocks they thought would do well in the spring. The team’s rise to the top has been long — it began the contest in 97th place.

“I encouraged them to pick energy stocks and manufacturing, but that did not work,” Ms. Floor said. “They ended up going with Disney because it’s springtime, and a lot of people are going to do a lot of trips for spring break. One of the boys picked Cabelas because he thought that with spring coming, people would get stuff to go camping.”
