Carl Armstrong Memorial Law Day Essay Contest

“Realizing the Dream: Equality for All” was the topic of the annual Caty Armstrong Memorial Law Day essay contest sponsored by the Toledo Bar Association and The Blade.

First-place winners, whose essays appear today, will receive $250 checks from the bar association and plaques from The Blade.

Second and third-place winners will receive $175 and $100 checks, respectively.

This year’s winners are Margaret Figliomeni, Sylvania Northview High School, Division I (grades 11 and 12); Mahnur Khan, Perrysburg High School, Division II (grades 9 and 10), and Sadie Kaplan, West Side Montessori Center, Division III (grades 7 and 8).

Margaret’s teacher is Brienne Laskey, Mahnur's teacher is Dave Perez, and Sadie’s teacher is Mary Brandon.

Second and third-place winners are:

Division I: Katelyn Work, Sylvania Northview High School, second; Cassandra Roberts, Maumee High School, third.

Division II: Donovan DeMilt, Central Catholic High School, second; John Sullivan, Maumee Valley Country Day High School, third.

Division III: Claire Kohler, West Side Montessori Center, second; Madalyn Vesoulis, West Side Montessori Center, third.

Awards will be presented Friday at the Law Day luncheon at the Best Western Premier Grand Plaza Hotel & Convention Center in downtown Toledo. The keynote speaker will be Judge Benita Pearson from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio.

The contest is named for the late Caty Armstrong. A student at Sylvania Southview High School and an award winner in the 1993 essay contest, she died in an auto accident that year.
